Mohd Azman speaks to reporters on the ‘bomoh’ scam in Sibu.

KUCHING: Scammers who claimed to be shamans in a recent fraud case in Sibu did not resort to any form of charm in carrying out their bluff.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said this when asked about the scam which saw a 65-year-old noodle seller losing RM231,792.

“So far, there are no signs of charm elements because the suspect’s instructions given to the victims, were straight forward.

“From putting money in the bag to performing prayers to bringing the bag home and to open it after a month had passed, it is all straight forward,” he said at the state police headquarters yesterday (June 28).

In this case, Mohd Azman said the victim panicked when she was told of her ill-fortune by the three suspects.

Because of that, the elderly woman withdrew money for the alleged prayers to be performed by the suspects.

As such he advised the public to not panic or be easily fooled by unknown individuals.

“They should get the opinions of their family members or friends if they encounter such situation.

“Or the better option is that they can go directly to the nearest police station for further assistance to verify the incident or claims,” he said.
