KUCHING: Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang has clarified his legal firm is not the one representing Petronas in the suit brought by the Sarawak government against the national oil company.

“I wish to clarify that the law firm representing Petronas is Messr Idris, Alvin Chong & Partners, and it has no connection with me at all,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Idris, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief said he made the clarification due to confusion by some parties.

“I make this clarification because of some queries on my stance vis-a-vis our State rights on Sarawak Sales Tax (SST) and Petronas due to confusion as to the commonality in the name of Petronas’ lawyers and that of my legal firm.

“I have my own small legal firm located at Jalan Matang Kuching called Idris Buang & Associates,” he said.

He reiterated his consistent stance on the fight for Sarawak rights, whether under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), federal Constitution and state laws.

“I will always be behind the State government led by our Right Honourable Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he said.

Petronas is said to be the only oil and gas company operating in the state that has yet to pay the state government the 5 per cent SST on petroleum products.

It was given until end of October this year to pay up, but no payment was made which left the state government no choice but to file a statement of claim at the Kuching High Court registry on Nov 21.
