KUCHING: The Volunteerism Programme is an excellent initiative in nurturing future generations that are responsible and attentive to the needs of others.

Tupong assemblyman, Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said that such programme is able to create awareness, nurture, encourage and produce volunteers from all walks of life.

“When they are attentive to the surrounding situations, the community — especially the youth — will be able to extend assistance without thinking of what they’ll get in return,” he said in his speech at the awards and launching ceremony of the state-level Volunteers Day here at the Youth and Sports Complex on Sunday (Dec 6).

He also lauded the programme which was held for the first time in Sarawak; praising the efforts of the state National Youth and Sports Department in organising it.

“The objective of this programme is to create awareness and appreciate volunteers, as well as to nurture youth as future leaders at the grassroots level through volunteer activities.

“To me, this volunteer culture is an idea and appreciation of the noble values of the community which is often translated through sincere contributions and partnerships for the greater good of the community,” he said.

Fazzrudin, who is also the advisor of Sarawak Volunteers, said that values such as ‘willingness’ and ‘sincerity’ must be present in volunteers.

“It is also termed as a social responsibility and community service — giving back to the community — which is a cornerstone for citizens who are caring, responsible, and help each other regardless of religion, race and colour,” he explained.

Fazzrudin also highlighted that on behalf of the state government, he was happy to see many institutions and agencies involved in the success of the volunteer programme.
