Ops against rabies in DBKU, MBKS areas continue next week

KUCHING: Operations against rabies involving areas under the administration of the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will continue from April 22 to May 1 from 6am to 7pm.

The Information Department, Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and state Health Department will also organise an awareness programme for residents which is aimed at educating pet owners and the public on the dangers of rabies.

Members of the public are invited to attend the awareness programme at the MBKS Community Hall on April 17 at 9am.

During the operation, the DVS will conduct a free rabies vaccination programme.

Failure to vaccinate dogs is an offence under Section 40 of Veterinary Public Health Ordinance, 1999, which carries a RM2,500 fine.

Owners of dogs roaming in rabies-infected areas are also liable to be fined up to RM5,000 or three months’ jail or both upon conviction under Section 37(2) & (3) of Veterinary Public Health Ordinance, 1999.

Sarawak has declared rabies as a Level II Disaster after 16 deaths were recorded.

To date, 24,600 animal bite cases were reported.
