KUCHING: Sabah team OSCA Warriors emerged as the champions of Song Kheng Hai Memorial Cup 7s 2017 on Sunday.

OSCA Warriors beat team Blackhawks from TUDM 31-5 in the final after earlier beating Serdang Angel by 24-19.

OSCA Warriors received RM5,000, challenge trophy and medals while the runners-up Blackhawks got RM2,5000, a trophy and medals.

In the final plate category, team Wolfpack from Kuching won against Sibu Swans by 24-5, followed by Miri Division Rugby Association who topped the final bowl category after beating UNIMAS 17-0.

Wolfpack took home with RM2,000, a trophy and medals, while Sibu Swans won RM1,000, trophy and medals.

Miri Division Rugby Association also walked home with RM600, a trophy and medals, while UNIMAS received RM400, a trophy and medals.

Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Talib Zulpilip who represented Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, said the Chief Minister will continue to support rugby as it is also one of his favourite sports.

“I will support your efforts to improve the field condition here and also improve the surrounding infrastructure.

“We will try to renovate the existing infrastructure and expand it,” said Talib in his text of speech when officiating the closing ceremony of the tournament at Song Kheng Hai Field, Padungan, on Sunday.

He also hoped that the tournament will continue to be held here in efforts to promote the sport and attract young players.

The two-days event saw participation from a total of 15 teams from Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

Also present were First Infantry Division commander, Major General Stephen Mundaw, organising chairman Richard Song Swee Jin and other distinguished guests.
