SIBU: The Covid-19 pandemic proves that humans are able to rise above the situation by quickly adapting to the ever-changing environment.

Speaking at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) 6th convocation ceremony yesterday, UTS chairman Dr Annuar Rapaee said the new norm has raised new barriers and posed unprecedented challenges to students and educational institutions.

He said, “It was estimated that over 1.2 billion students globally were affected as educational institutions all over the world shut their doors and had to change their teaching and learning processes.”

In order to cope with the constraints caused by the new norms, educational institution needed to adapt by improvising and pivoting to online learning methods, or e-learning.

Dr. Annuar pointed out that the pandemic also created an opportunity to move teaching and learning to digital platforms and proved the importance of technology and digitalisation in education.

“This move also further confirms that online education is plausible even on a much larger scale and this could change the landscape of education forever.

“The accomplishment by UTS students who managed to graduate amidst all the chaos is a testament that our young generation is able to overcome any obstacles regardless of how severe and difficult they are.”

Dr. Annuar praised the graduates for their persistence and dedication in continuing their studies despite the situation.

“Remember to always be vigilant and keep your mind open so that you are able to adapt to changes and grab any opportunities that may lie ahead,” he said.
