Tan delivers his speech

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is urging more private investors to invest in commercial and industrial projects in areas under its jurisdiction.

In making this call, its chairman Tan Kai said MPP’s jurisdiction has become a fast-growing municipality, with the number of private holdings totalling 78,805 properties as of July 31 this year.

Of the figure, Tan said 91 per cent or 71,660 are residential, followed by 7 per cent or 5,501 (commercial) and 2 per cent or 1,644 industrial.

“I would like to urge more private investors to come to MPP areas to invest in more commercial and industrial projects as this can spur the economy in our area to greater heights,” he said at the MPP 27th Commemoration Day and Appreciation Dinner held at a hotel here on Tuesday (Aug 29).

“In addition, there will be more employment opportunities to offer to our local community.”

In MPP’s effort to promote tourism in Padawan, he also encouraged the private sector to organise more tourism-related programmes as Kota Padawan and its surrounding areas have great potential with nature-based attractions such as the Bengoh Range, waterfalls in Kampung Assum and hot spring and Bidayuh longhouse at Kampung Annah Rais, among others.

“MPP is willing to work hand in hand with various government agencies such as the Sarawak Tourism Board, Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia and private sectors. Through smart partnership, MPP will be able to popularise ‘tourism jewels’ in Padawan not only in Malaysia, but internationally.

“The economic spin-off from tourism activities will benefit the locals as it will create more employment and business opportunities,” he added.

In the meantime, Tan said this year, the council undertook 79 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) projects totaling RM14.095 million in seven state constituencies and one RTP project for RM50,000 in one parliamentary constituency.

He called for more infrastructure developments to be carried out given that the council is covering a wide area and there will be more requests from residents from time to time.
