KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Customs) provides tax-free entry passes to foreigners and Malaysians who are permanent residents or holders of work permits to bring their Brunei-registered vehicles into Sarawak.

Each pass is valid for three months from the date of entry through the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) stations at Sungai Tujuh, Miri; ICQS Tadungan and ICQS Pandaruan in Limbang; and ICQS Mengkalap, Lawas, under Item 13 of the Customs Duty (Exemption) Order 2017, Item 30 of the Excise Duty (Exemption) Order 2017, and Item 23 Sales Tax (Exemption) Order 2018.

State Customs director Herman Shah Abdullah said as a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the department has decided that all holders of vehicle entry passes that have expired can apply for an extension.

“The holders may apply for extension to the Customs office that issued the original passes.

“This is on condition that an exit application has been submitted to Brunei through its Prime Minister’s Office (JPM) Portal. Submit the application document that has been rejected through the Portal to the control station as proof that a vehicle cannot be brought into Brunei,” he said in a statement last Wednesday (Oct 28).

He also stressed that the extension of the passes is subject to approval by Customs on a case by case basis.

“It is an offence under the Customs Act 1967 for any vehicle owner to fail to bring his/her vehicle back to Brunei while the pass is still valid,” he said.
