LUBOK ANTU: Safety measures should always be given foremost priority to avoid riverine accidents.
Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the safety of passengers as well as factors such as boat or ship conditions, emergency equipment, navigation, traffic and waterway conditions must always be taken into account.

“Boat operators and passengers also need to be more aware and always take safety measures before starting on a journey using water transport.

“At the same time, awareness should be created among the community such as how to use emergency water transport equipment and rescue methods when there is an emergency in the waters,” he said.

He said this at a River Transport Safety Campaign in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak Day celebration and the school holidays at the District Council Hall, Pangkalan Perahu Panjang, Empangan Hidro Batang Ai, recently.

He added that the Sarawak government is committed to channeling continuous allocations for terminal and passenger jetty upgrades for safety purposes.
