IPOH: The Perak government has urged district councils in the state to provide free housing to the hardcore poor through the Organised Village Plan (RPT) as they cannot afford low-cost houses even priced as low as RM70,000.

Chairman of the state Housing, Local Government, Public Transport, Non-Islamic Affairs and New Villages Committee Paul Yong Choo Kiong said this was one of the ways the state government could show it cared for the people of the state.

He said if there were participants of the RPT who were from the hardcore group, the local councils should provide free housing to them.

Yong was replying to a supplementary question from Razman Zakaria (PAS-Gunung Semanggol) at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

In his question, Razman asked what measures the state government was taking to ensure that the price of houses was within the reach of the poor.

Yong who is also the State Assemblyman for Tronoh said the state government was in the midst of discussions with the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) and had identified potential sites to develop People’s Housing Programmes for the low (B40) and middle-income (M40) groups.

“We hope that the KPKT will continue with the projects in Kampung Chain, Lenggong and Bagan Datuk,” he said.

He added that with the newly-launched Perak State Housing Policy, the Perak government was focused on the B40 and M40 groups and targeting the price of low and medium-cost houses to be under RM140,000 and under RM70,000. – Bernama
