Pivotal figure with key contributions to customary law

KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has described the late Sarawak Native Court of Appeal president Datuk Thomas Akin Jelimin as a pivotal figure who made significant contributions to customary law among the Dayak community.

According to a news report by TVS on Thursday, Uggah said that Akin, during his lifetime, was a key figure who aided the Sarawak government in drafting laws related to Native Customary Rights (NCR) Land, Pemakai Menoa, and Pulau Galau in 2017 when the government amended the relevant ordinances.

“The late Akin had earnestly and diligently assisted us with his ideas and methods to resolve these issues,” he said.

He said this when met by TVS after paying his last respects at the residence of the late Akin in Taman BDC Stampin here.

Uggah also said that the late Akin was directly involved in the process of upgrading the Native Courts of Sarawak.

The late Akin was an important figure in shaping the direction of the court.

Hailing from Ulu Bawan, Kanowit, he passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 74 and is survived by his wife, Datin Nancy Anyau, a son, and two daughters.

His funeral service is scheduled to take place at St Joseph’s Cathedral here tomorrow (March 15) at 10.30 am and to be followed by the burial at the Mile 13 Catholic Cemetery.
