KUCHING: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports has plans to draw more visitors to museums in the state.
According to its permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee, the ministry is currently planning activities to attract more local and foreign tourists to visit museums in Sarawak.
“Besides planning themes that can attract all levels of society, the ministry also plans to upgrade the infrastructure such as buildings and existing exhibition grounds.
“This is a continuous effort by the Sarawak Museum Department to conserve and upgrade existing museums and forts throughout Sarawak,” he said at a breaking of fast event organised by the department at the Sarawak Islamic Museum here recently.
He added only 10 to 15 per cent of the artefacts were exhibited at the museums while the rest were still being studied by the department.
“An artefact will be meaningless if there is no historical background story behind it. The background story will be used as ‘story telling’ to attract visitors,” he explained.
Commenting on the breaking of fast, Hii said the activity was an annual event to celebrate with orphans in Kuching.
“This year, we host 15 orphans from the Pertubuhan Kebajikan Baiturrahman where we also give out some duit raya.”
