Plumber jailed for injuring man suspected of taking his picture

KUCHING: A plumber was sentenced to eight months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here on Friday (Nov 3) for causing injury to a man he suspected of taking his picture.

Don, 29, pleaded guilty to one charge read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.

According to the charge, he, along with several others, intentionally caused injury to a 24-year-old victim using a guandao weapon in the parking lot of a private hospital in Jalan Stutong at around 5.10pm on Oct 1.

The accused was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code. If found guilty, he could face a prison term of up to 10 years, a fine, caning, or any combination thereof.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant was attacked by four armed men while he was parking his car in front of the hospital. This attack resulted in the complainant sustaining injuries on the top of his head.

The motive for the attack was the accused and his associates’ suspicion that the complainant had taken their pictures using a mobile phone in the vicinity.

However, upon examination of the complainant’s phone, it was found that no pictures had been taken. The accused and the others subsequently left the area in three cars.

The complainant filed a police report, leading to the arrest of the accused on Oct 2. The case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
