KUCHING: Police have opened an investigation paper on vandalism with regard to a political party’s campaign materials in Bintulu.

A police spokesman for the 15th general election (GE15), Supt Douglas Nyeging Taong in a statement, said the case was being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing loss or damage to another individual’s property.

This was after a report was brought to the attention of the police where several flags and banners of a political party erected by the roadside were damaged and broken in front of a school.

Supt Nyeging added that they also received a report from a representative of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) who insisted that the coalition had no connection or knowledge about banners with damning words regarding another political party, put up in Bau, Serikin and Stass areas.

Aside from that, three police reports from Election Commission (EC) enforcement officers were received regarding the act of uprooting some political parties’ flags and banners erected in areas where the parties are not contesting.

The flags and banners were found erected in Tabuan Jaya, Bau and Bintulu.

Such act is in violation of the conditions and regulations provided under the Election Offences Act 1954 and the case is referred to the EC for further action.

As of Nov 12, Sarawak police have approved a total of 303 permits for political parties to hold their campaign rallies throughout the state.

All political parties are advised to remind their supporters to not commit any illegal acts, and to always maintain peace and harmony.
