KUCHING: Sarawak police arrested a total of 982 drug pushers and addicts during its recent operations against the menace in the state.

Outgoing state narcotics chief ACP Sahar Abdul Latif attributed the success to a mapping system in tackling drug abuse where police netted 406 pushers and addicts in their ‘Ops Bersepadu’ and another 576 during ‘Ops Ice-breaker’ this year.

He said the youngest person arrested was only 14 years old while many of the elderly ones were grandfathers. Most of those arrested were on syabu.

He disclosed that nine big-time drug pushers were banished under the Special Measures Act 1985.

Sahar who is transferred to Bukit Aman Narcotics is replaced by Supt Hasnir Abdul Hamid.

Sahar explained that under its mapping system, police would do profiling on drug peddlers based on information obtained from addicts and drug users.

He said that based on the system, police were able to arrest their targets during the ‘Ops Bersepadu’ and ‘Ops Ice Breaker’ even in remote villages in the state.

“This proves that the system works,” he said in a press conference after handing over duties to Hasnir at the police headquarters here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Hasnir said he would continue the good work done by Sahar in the fight against drug menace in Sarawak.
