KUCHING: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador’s proposal to increase the salaries of the lower ranked police personnel has received the support of Universiti Malaya (UM) political analyst associate professor Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi.

He agreed with the IGP’s statement that the salaries of the lower ranked police personnel were low and not enough to cover the costs of living, especially for those stationed in the cities.

“The Royal Malaysia Police Force should apply to the Public Service Department (PSD) Malaysia for allowances in the urban areas or cities.

“If this is done, these police personnel will be more focused and eager to carry out their daily tasks without having to think deeply about their needs,” he said.

Dr Awang Azman said salaries for lower ranked police personnel should be increased for their welfare and to reduce corruption within the force.

“Looking after the welfare of the lower ranked police personnel can also increase the credibility of the police,” he added.

“In countries such as Australia, the police personnel enjoy higher salaries while their welfare is looked after. So, there are lower cases of corruption among the police there.”

Dr Awang Azman also stressed the need to upgrade the police quarters’ needs constantly.
