KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government has agreed in principle to the establishment of a Borneo Railway System.

In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said with the establishment of the railway, economic relations between Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia will be enhanced further.

“As such, I will leave the matter to the federal government,” he said during a townhall session in conjunction with the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2023 programme held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) on today (Oct 21).

Having said that he also pointed out that the Indonesian government’s plan to move their capital to Nusantara, will definitely have a bearing on Sarawak.

“Indonesia has more or less talked to us on how Sarawak and Indonesia can cooperate to develop Nusantara in the spirit of Asean. Therefore, what we did was, we gave them electricity which we are now supplying to West Kalimantan.

“Aside from that, we also invested 25 per cent in the 1,200MW hydroelectric project through Sarawak Energy to generate energy for Nusantara. This was launched by me and Indonesian President Joko Widodo (known as Jokowi),” he said.

He also noted that Sarawak has the potential to generate 20,000MW of electricity inclusive of the usage of new technology based on solar.

Abanh Johari said with the availability of this technology, there is a need for the younger generation to attain expertise in this field.

“With them, God willing, Sarawak will become the hub for the development of Borneo,” he added.
