Premier proposes more car-free time for locals

KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has suggested that the North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) car-free morning programme be extended to twice a month in the future.

“With the programme, families will be able to do leisure activities together and foster better relationships among local residents,” he said.

Currently the programme is held on the first Sunday of every month, from 6.30am to 10am, allowing residents to do morning exercise such as cycling and aerobics without traffic disruption.

Meanwhile,a total of RM500,000 will be channeled to Kejiranan Mesra (KJM) under the area of North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) to organize various programmes throughout 2023.

Abang Johari said DBKU has identified about 363 programmes to be implemented throughout 2023 thus the need for additional funding.

“The total cost needed for all the programmes will amount up to RM900,000 and DBKU has approved an allocation of approximately RM400,000.

“I have decided to top up RM500,000 to make up for the balance to help facilitate its implementation,” he said at the KJM DBKU dinner held at a hotel here yesterday (Dec 6).

Speaking at the same dinner, Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that the programmes lined up were based on the recommendations of the KJM in the five state constituencies within the DBKU area which includes Pantai Damai, Demak Laut, Samariang, Tupong and Satok.

“With the additional funds, it’s certain that the programmes organised can run smoothly.” said Abdul Rahman, who is also the Pantai Damai assemblyman.

Also present were Premier’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, DBKU Mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan and DBKU Director Mohamed Khaidir Abang.
