KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg received a courtesy call from the first Malaysian ulama from Oxford University, Datuk Dr Afifi Al-Akiti at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the purpose of Dr Afifi’s visit to Kuching was upon invitation as a candidate interview panelist for the Sarawak Sabbatical Programme at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OXCIS), United Kingdom.

“Dr Afifi is a Malay scholar at Oxford University and is versatile in various fields of knowledge.

“He created history when he became the first Malaysian to be appointed to teach at the world’s most famous university.

“Since 2010, he has been recognised in the annual list of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world (The Muslim 500: The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims),” said UKAS.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Dr Farhan Nizami from Oxford University.
