SIBU: The inspection of electrical wiring in homes is crucial to prevent fires resulting from short circuits, said Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association president Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming.

Lau emphasised the importance of residents checking their home’s electrical wiring, especially if they have lived there for 15 to 20 years.

“I’ve been informed that the recent fire was caused by electrical wiring issues. I believe residents who have lived here in Kampung Bahagia Jaya Teku for 20 years should prioritise checking their home’s electrical wiring.

“This precaution is essential as wiring problems can lead to fires,” he said when met by reporters following the presentation of a cash donation by the Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association to the fire victims in Kampung Bahagia Jaya Teku here today.

Lau also urged authorities to address the residents’ concerns and improve their living conditions, in addition to providing land for housing.

“This area, Kampung Bahagia Jaya Teku, is a resettlement area. There have been two to three floods in the past year. I hope the authorities will take steps to resolve the issues faced by the residents,” he added.

Meanwhile, regarding the cash donation, Lau said that it was provided by the Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association to assist the victims in purchasing essential food items.

“I encourage other organisations to also extend their support to the victims,” he urged.

Thirty-one people were made homeless after an afternoon blaze laid waste to four houses in Lorong Bahagia Selatan 4 here on Friday.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident as the victims managed to get to safety.
