KUCHING: Datuk Wee Hong Seng has stressed the need to prioritise mental health within the healthcare system.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor asserted that mental health should be a top priority and that everyone has the right to the highest attainable standard of mental health, irrespective of age or background.

This includes protection from mental health risks, access to quality care, and the right to liberty and inclusion within the community.

“Therefore, everyone needs to engage in mental health awareness talks or discussions to broaden their minds on the importance of mental health.

“Mental health awareness is essential for reducing stigma, promoting understanding, and improving access to resources and support services.

“Awareness can be incorporated into everyday life through self-care, education, empathy, speaking up, supporting mental health initiatives, prioritising mental health in relationships, and creating a safe space for discussions.”

He made these remarks during the Mental Health Made Easy Talk, held in conjunction with World Mental Health Day at MBKS Auditorium here yesterday (Oct 26).

Wee also emphasised the importance of prioritising the wellbeing of both employers and employees in government civil service and private companies.

He urged organisations to create positive working environments and robust support systems, emphasising the integral role of staff welfare in delivering effective and efficient services to the public.

“We must prioritise our staff’s wellbeing as they are the council’s backbone. The management must make sure that their welfare comes first.”

Furthermore, he encouraged the public to regularly check on family, friends, and neighbours, as individuals with mental health conditions may conceal their struggles behind a façade of happiness.

“Prove to the world that having mental health issues is nothing to be ashamed of. We need to educate more about mental health illnesses and raise awareness among the public,” he added.
