KUCHING: The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MoTS) has expressed concern about the increasing number of road accidents, particularly along the Pan Borneo Highway.
Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin cited a lack of road safety awareness among local residents living near the highway as a major factor contributing to these accidents.
“Statistics indicate that 60 per cent of accidents on the Pan Borneo Highway are caused by human negligence,” he said during the launch of the Transport-Awareness Behavioural Change (T-ABC) programme here on Tuesday (Sept 5).
He added that MoTS will conduct briefing sessions in collaboration with the police, the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and road discipline experts.
“We will hold a road discipline lecture programme in Sri Aman, and the Sri Aman District officer will invite all longhouse chiefs along the Pan Borneo Highway to join.”
Lee encouraged longhouse chiefs and village leaders along the Pan Borneo Highway to advise their communities about road safety and to take the matter seriously as it concerns their lives.
The T-ABC Programme, which attracted 500 participants, including students, civil servants, teachers, community leaders, and village chiefs from the Kuching Division, aims to instil proper behaviour among road users, enhance public knowledge, promote courteous behaviour, and motivate road users of all ages to be safe on the road.
