KUCHING: Sarawak is currently promoting the Emergency Vehicle Pre-Emption (EPV) system in hopes of reducing accidents involving ambulances and public vehicles when in emergency situations.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the system development is in line with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision towards evolving the technological landscape of Sarawak.

“This system will be crucial in reducing accidents involving ambulances and public vehicles and delivering timely medical care for patients.

“Of course, anyone can have big ideas, but everything has to start small from somewhere, and the collaboration of both local private and public companies is a good start.

“This shows that when everyone works together towards a vision, anything can be achievable no matter how small the success is,” he said in the proof-of-concept (POC) event at Simpang Tiga traffic light/Jalan Mendu on Monday.

Dr Sim hoped that the technology implemented in Kuching can be applied to other first responder systems like the Fire and Rescue Department and major towns in Sarawak.

“We want to prove that we can prevent lives from being lost through the application of simple technology.

“Furthermore, we also want to make a point whereby local talents have the capability of developing such technology to benefit the society,” he added.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng recounted accidents which involved ambulances and public vehicles.

“I sincerely advise the public to continue adhering to traffic rules during the testing period for the EPV system.

“Only move when the traffic lights turn green and do not try to run the red light as there are potentials of ambulances passing by from your lane,” said Wee.
