KUCHING: The proposed merger between the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) is deemed necessary for the latter’s political survival.

Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan said that his party had loosely collaborated with PSB during the 15th General Election last year to avoid contesting against each other and prevent the splitting of votes.

He said that the party viewed this as a potential starting point for shaping Sarawak’s political landscape and had hoped the collaboration would endure but it did not unfold as they had wanted.

“PSB never started as an opposition or as an outsider of the government. They were accustomed to the power and privileges they had enjoyed, and it’s natural for them to desire a return to government.

“Perhaps they also recognise the challenges of remaining outside the government, as it presents a different environment,” Voon said when contacted today (Dec 26).

Voon opined that the proposed merger is particularly necessary for PSB’s continued survival, but he expressed doubts about its benefits for the voters.

“This (proposed merger) will further weaken the opposition in Sarawak, leaving the people with limited choices and alternative options for the next state election,” he said.

However, Voon mentioned that PBK is not troubled by the latest political developments in Sarawak, as the party’s mission is not a short-term political endeavour but a fight for Sarawak’s interests.

“Although our relationship with PSB didn’t last or work towards the direction we want, PBK is not sad about it as the parting of ways with PSB was expected. We wish them good luck,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) president Lina Soo, when contacted, declined to comment.

“No comment. We wish them well,” she said.
