KUCHING: All parties must rise above their political affiliations and differences for the well-being and safety of the people during the forthcoming 12th state election.

They must therefore take all precautionary measures and stay vigilant during the whole process.

Bishop of Kuching (Sarawak & Brunei Darussalam) the Right Rev Datuk Danald Jute made this appeal on the back of concerns surrounding the health, safety and well-being of the people amid the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic.

“While the Diocese of Kuching welcomes the opportunity for the people to exercise their rights to elect the government of their choice, we are also deeply concerned about the issues surrounding the health, safety and well-being of the people, in light of Covid-19 which is still spreading in our community.

“Therefore, we urge all parties involved with the election to take all the necessary precautions. The safety of everyone must never be compromised at any time,” he said in a statement issued Wednesday (Nov 10).

Danald reiterated that the health and well-being of everyone should be prioritised before, during and after the election.

He said that it would be tragic if, by holding the state election,  more new clusters occur.

“We exhort all parties to rise above their political affiliations and differences for the betterment of all Sarawakians, who inherit a rich legacy of mutual trust, respect, brotherhood and amity.

“All attempts inimical to peace and harmony must be opposed. Likewise, all attempts to curtail our freedom, including freedom to practice and promote one’s faith and religion must be rejected,” he noted.

In a separate development, Danald said the Anglican Diocese of Kuching had just concluded its 30th Biennial Diocesan Synod, the highest governing body of the Church held at St Thomas’ Cathedral which was held since Nov 7.

An estimated 200 delegates including the priests and parish delegates attended the synod.

Danald said he came out with the statement following concerns expressed by the delegates during the synod.
