KUCHING:  Persatuan Wanita Kayan Sarawak (PWKS) handed over its donation of clothings, daily necessities and cash to the victims of the recent fire at Uma Badeng, Sungai Koyan, Sungai Asap in Belaga.

The items and cash donation were handed over to Murum state assemblyman Chukpai Ugon by PWKS chairperson, Roslyn Lah at Lepau Restaurant, Jalan Ban Hock here yesterday.

Chukpai thanked Roslyn and her committee for their effort in assisting the fire victims at Uma Badeng.

“It is a very good effort. What is most important is the cooperation and willingness to assist,” he said.

Chukpai disclosed that the recent fire that destroyed the 15-door longhouse affected 102 people from 15 families.

He said for the past 19 years, nine longhouse fires had occurred in Sungai Asap, Belaga, and the recent fire was the fourth time involving Uma Badeng longhouse.

Chukpai appealed to the government to set up fire station in Sungai Asap, saying that although there were Bomba community and voluntary firefighting units in the area, they were not enough.
