KUCHING: The Borneo Railway System, connecting East Malaysia, Brunei, and Kalimantan will significantly enhance tripartite trade in the Borneo Island region, said Datuk Jonathan Chai.

The secretary-general of the Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry described the proposal as a laudable idea, highlighting the current limitations in connectivity among East Malaysia, Brunei, and Kalimantan.

“Should this project materialise, it will definitely intensify the tripartite trade among the three countries in the Borneo Island.

“This is particularly important after the relocation of the Indonesian capital to Nusantara in East Kalimantan.

“This enhanced connectivity will foster bilateral trade between the countries concerned and will bring along the much-needed business opportunities in the enlarged market region,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

Additionally, Chai anticipated that the proposed railway system would contribute to the development of enhanced logistics infrastructure, leading to lower transportation costs and transit times for goods.

Despite the positive outlook, Chai underscored the need for the governments of the three countries to first address the existing differences in cross-border trade regulations.

“They would have to harmonise their customs procedures to promote economic integration and cooperation.

“The leaders must have the farsighted vision of promoting sustainable development of the regional economy through cooperation and enhanced borderless connectivity,” he stressed.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, during a townhall session in conjunction with the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2023 programme at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), announced that the federal government has agreed in principle to the establishment of a Borneo Railway System.

Abang Johari envisioned the system as a catalyst for strengthening economic ties within the Borneo region and fostering growth in the Asean region.

However, he said he referred the issue to the federal government to conduct a feasibility study on the Borneo Railway System that will serve the whole of Borneo in collaboration with the Brunei and Indonesia governments.

In addition, he said collaborative efforts between local chambers of commerce and Indonesian counterparts are already underway to lay the groundwork for joint initiatives related to the development of Nusantara, indicating proactive involvement within the business communities.
