Raja Tenggiri competition can attract tourists

MUKAH: Raja Tenggiri fishing competition, a new activity that can attract people who love to catch fish, has the potential to become one of the tourism attractions for people outside of here.

Tellian assemblyman, Royston Valentine said such fishing competitions are able to attract the interest of outsiders to witness and participate in.

He added that visitors from outside Mukah have the opportunity to see the unique culture and taste the traditional food in the area.

“In addition, the competition which was held simultaneously with the Kembara Merdeka Sarawak programme in conjunction with Sarawak 60th Independence Day further enlivened the atmosphere of the celebration,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the prize presentation and closing ceremony of the Raja Tenggiri fishing competition at Dataran Udang, here, on Saturday.

“We also hope that the fishing community in this area will cooperate in ensuring that this kind of programme is carried out continuously,” he added.

At the same time, he gave a grant amounting to RM5,000 to the Sarawak fishing community to continue with such competitions.

The competition has three categories consisting of the Heaviest Mackerel (one mackerel), the Best Team (three mackerel) and the Best Skipper.

The champion for the Heaviest Mackerel category was won by Andyzul Ubut with a mackerel weight of 6.06 kilograms, while the runner-up was Mohd Musa Suntong with a weight of 5.30 kilograms

Third place went to Abang Abdul Aziz Abang Ibrahim with a mackerel weighing 5.19 kilograms.

Meanwhile, the Best Team category was won by Lucky Strike 1 and the Best Skipper category was won by a boat called Joker.
