THE concept and implementation of a Central Port Authority will pave the way for  a strong port management and governance to ensure efficient and effective operations of all ports in Sarawak.

Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii (GPS-Repok) said the timely introduction of the Sarawak Port Authority Bill 2024 will foster trade growth, increase industrial and logistics development and become a transport hub.

He said this development will also generate job opportunities for the people of Sarawak and promote the tourism sector such as cruise ships.

“In this era of globalisation, the port industry is one of the industries that is always dynamic and competitive. Since most of the trade in the world depends on sea transport, the port plays a very important role as a benchmark for economic development and progress of a country.

“It cannot be denied that a country has world-class port with a perfect and sophisticated infrastructure can highlight the economic strength of a country as an attraction. As such, I am confident that this Bill has been introduced at the right time,” he said when debating in support of the Bill today.

Huang was confident that the state government will strive to increase competitiveness and strengthen the management line to improve the service delivery system and port development as a whole under the Sarawak Port Authority Bill 2024.

“We are grateful for the visionary leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as he has led Sarawak to a level of sustainable development and towards economic progress and prosperity.

“The successful implementation of the Sarawak Ports Authority Bill 2024 will certainly be a historic milestone for Sarawak towards the targets set by the state government for 2030,” he said.
