KUCHING: Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) has again reminded members of the public to immediately inform the police when they see suspicious figures in their neighbourhoods.

Its president Datuk John Lau Pang Heng said the public were equally important as the eyes and ears of the police in preventing crime.

“Crime prevention is every citizen’s duty, including SCPA; we have a responsibility to our community, and not ask others to look after our own community,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

Meanwhile, he said SCPA together with the police patrolled Tabuan Jaya, Tabuan Laru, Tabuan Desa, Tabuan Tranquility, Tabuan Dayak and their surrounding areas last Friday night.

“Our team reported that it was very peaceful as all gates and doors were tightly locked. And this should be a good habit that everyone should practise to prevent thieves from entering the house,” he stressed.

He said the residents were very pleased and felt safer that police conducted patrols in their housing areas.

“In a recent academic survey by a PhD candidate from a local public university, of 500 households in Kuching, 80.5 per cent of the respondents trusted the police services.

“This is the second highest after Penang where the trust level is 81.5 per cent,” he shared.

Lau urged members of the public to support the police fully so that they could make Kuching a better place to live.

“Our association would also like to thank the public who always contact us to patrol their housing estates with the police. And we welcome members of the community to join us.”

He said the public could always contact him at 010-3268333 or the police headquarters to inform of suspicious activities.

The Kuching police headquarters can be contacted at 082-245522 or its hotline at 082-244444.
