KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged party members and Malaysians in general to respect Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah’s decision to quit as party vice-president and Penang PKR chairman.

In a statement yesterday, Anwar said it was undeniable that the decision was a great loss to not only PKR members but to the entire nation.

“Nurul Izzah and I have discussed at length on her intention to step down. It is not for me to divulge details but I do know that with the pace of political developments (having) been relentless for the last nine months, she is sick and tired of the deception and machinations of those who are far more interested in playing politics instead of focusing on helping the rakyat they purport to serve.

“Despite being elected vice-president with an overwhelming majority and appointed Penang PKR chairman following a convincing majority from the state’s division chiefs, she has chosen to step down. Thus, give her space to reflect, and ultimately decide, on her next course of action,” he said.

Nurul Izzah, known as ‘Puteri Reformasi’ (Reformation Princess) since the early days of the ‘reformasi’ movement, had on Monday announced quitting her posts as PKR vice-president and Penang PKR chairman, but said she would remain as a PKR ordinary member and Permatang Pauh MP until her term ends.

Anwar said many even thought it was an impulsive act, but he believed that it was completely in keeping with the character of someone who had always had the courage to stand up for her ideals and beliefs.

“With her sense of duty and commitment of placing the interests of the people above hers, I have no doubt that she will continue to serve honourably and admirably,” he added. – Bernama
