KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS), concerned by the increasing cases of cybercrime, including unauthorised online banking transactions, will launch an anti-scam campaign on Sept 23.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the first anti-scam talk will be held next Saturday at MBKS auditorium at 2pm, where the public are encouraged to join the event and learn about how to be aware of scammers.

The talk will feature speakers and experts from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Wee said the first talk will be conducted in mandarin, followed by Bahasa Malaysia and English.

“Why in Mandarin first?

“This is because according to the statistics given by CCCD, the majority of scam victims are Chinese from different kinds of backgrounds, including housewives, retirees, businessmen, undergraduates, teachers, managers, even bankers and professionals such as accountants and doctors,” he said.

“As part of the city hall’s community services and in light of rampant online scams, MBKS has initiated a campaign with various activities for the public,” he told a press conference at the MBKS premises today.

Through the campaign, Wee hoped to create more awareness among the public and avoid themselves  falling into the scammer’s tricks and psychological tactics.

He said very often, victims not only lost their savings or hard-earned money, but also suffered  depression and embarrassment.

Apart from the talk, he said, participants will also be given a free ticket to watch ‘No More Bets’, which is scheduled to play the same evening at Vivacity TGV at 8.30 pm.

MBKS legal advisor Milton Foo said he has been handling various cybercrimes such as telegram scams, loan scams, job scams as well love scams – which are reflected in the movie.

“It is a movie about human trafficking and how these victims are cheated by digital scammers; it is a very interesting movie that can create awareness and avoid more people from becoming the next victim,” he stressed.

A total of 200 tickets will be available on a first-come-first served basis, strictly for those who had attended the talk only. Those who are interested can contact 0106601919 to register their names.
