KAPIT: Kelab Gagung Sibu Sarawak (KGS) jointly organised a ‘gotong royong’ project with the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) of Genturong Mas Rawing, Lubok Engkuang, Ulu Sungai Amang here to cement an access road to the house of two former soldiers namely Ranger (rtd) Bilun Anak Mandaw and Ranger (rtd) Sulau Anak Rawing last Saturday afternoon.
The houses of the two former soldiers which were built next to each other were constructed under the RumahMesra Rakyat programme sponsored by Jabatan Hal Ehwal Veteran Negeri Sarawak through the Jiwa Murni (Civic Action) concept.
The houses were in appreciation of the two former soldiers contributions to safeguarding the sovereignty of the country.
The gotong royong project is one of KGS’s community base service orientated programme to assist those in need. It was among the club’s several community service programmes organised this year.
Officiating at the gotong royong was Bukit Goram Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat.
In his speech Jamit lauded KGS and the JKKK of Genturong Mas Rawing, Lubok Engkuang, Ulu Sungai Amang for their commitment in carry out the gotong royong project for the people.
“I am happy to note that KGS is not only active in promoting Iban traditional warriors gear the ‘gagung’ but also they are very proactive in carrying out social service activity for the community and contribute towards the local community,” said Jamit and suggested the club organise other activities such as ‘santai’ (recreational) programme involving the local elected representatives.
On the gotong royong programme, Jamit said it could help to foster closer rapport and the spirit of working together among the community and also serves as a platform for unity. He added that the programme also served as a venue for an elected representative to meet the grassroots and to know their needs.
During the function Jamit also announced a government grant of RM12,000 for Genturong Mas Rawing, Lubok Engkuang, Ulu Sungai Amang to carry out improvements to their houses.
Among those present were secretary of KGS, Martin Bilun, the club’s Liaison Officer for Kapit, Favian Masing Lintang, Penghulu Madang Jelani, Tuai Rumah Richard Engking, Councillor George Tang and more than 10 KGS members.
