KUCHING: A total of RM2.1 million worth of tourism infrastructure facilities along Sungai Semadang in the Padawan area near here were handed over by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to seven of the villages involved.

According to MPP chairman, Lo Khere Chiang, over the last five years, MPP has built a lot of infrastructure facilities for tourism in villages along Sungai Semadang in the Padawan area.

“Today, we have completed all the infrastructure facilities to enhance tourism activities and at the same time benefit the local communities especially in their daily lives,” said Lo during the handing over of the tourism infrastructure projects along Sungai Semadang to the villages involved held at MPP building, Kota Padawan near here, yesterday.

He also told residents of the villages that the infrastructure facilities were implemented to improve their economy hence they must take care of them.

“There must be a sense of belonging, otherwise if the facilities were built and they get vandalised because the local community is not keen to take care of them, then I would say that the projects have failed and so too is the government’s intention.

“What we have been doing is to fulfil the government’s intention and we want it to be a success,” he said.

The RM2.1 million open tender projects were allocated to village security and development committee (JKKK) in seven villages namely Kampung Annah Rais, Kampung Bengoh, Kampung Temurang, Kampung Danu, Kampung Giam Baru, Kampung Giam Lama and Kampung Git.

Among the facilities built are public toilets, vehicle parking areas, concrete ramps, tourism information centres and pedestrian walk path to Rafflesia Park.
