RM500,000 allocated for school’s rebuilding

SIBU: The Education Ministry and Lanang MP Alice Lau have allocated a total of RM500,000 to rebuild the facilities of SJK(C) Kiew Nang which were destroyed by a fire on May 21.

Lau who visited the school yesterday said deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching had agreed to contribute RM350,000 while she would give RM150,000 from her MP fund.

“On behalf of Teo, I am announcing a financial assistance of RM350,000 from his ministry. My office is giving RM100,000 to buy building materials and another RM50,000 for rebuilding the facilities,” she said.

The money, Lau explained, would be used to rebuild four classrooms, toilets for the staff and female pupils, two storerooms, a kitchen, and a music room.

The school had estimated its loss due to the fire at up to RM600,000.

“Work on the facilities will start tomorrow (today) and it should be completed in two weeks’ time, especially the classrooms, so that the pupils can continue their lessons without a lengthy interruption,” she said.

Eighteen firemen fought the May 21 fire, but could not save the properties because the heat was too intense.

The school has 303 pupils from pre-school to Primary 6. It was built 60 years ago.
