KUCHING: A sum of RM9 million will be spent on drainage expansion project within the Padang Merdeka area.

According to Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Haji Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, the project will be implemented in three phases with the second phase expected to be completed by September, this year.

“This project is to tackle the problem of flash floods that keep occuring in the area.

“We hope that after the completion of the project, flash floods will be a thing of the past,” he said during a media briefing at the project site at Padang Merdeka here, yesterday.

Funded by the state government, the project will ensure that the drainage will not be clogged and water will be able to flow freely into the river.

Flash floods occurred frequently in the area as the drains that are not able to accommodate the large volume of rain water, and this is not relevant with the overall environment of the area which is continuously developing.
