KUCHING: A computer technician and his wife from Senggi Park in Siniawan, Bau   were robbed of a car and other valuables worth a total of RM60,000 at 3am this morning.

The victim said he and his wife were sleeping when five robbers entered their house through the rear kitchen window. Two of the five robbers tied them up with cables and clothes while the other three ransacked their house.

Four of them were masked and they were carrying long weapons believed to be ‘parang’ or samurai swords.

Their cash savings of RM2,000, a car, three mobile phones and other valuables were taken. The robbers also damaged a CCTV installed at the house to disable it.

After the robbers left, the couple managed to free themselves before they lodged a police report

According to Bau district police chief DSP Poge Nyaon, police had visited the scene to search for clues.

The husband and wife who were unhurt claimed to have heard the robbers conversing in an Indonesian language.

Poge said the case will be investigated under Section 397 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term, including whipping upon conviction.

He urged all residents in Bau to ensure their house gates are locked and to install additional locks on their doors, especially the kitchen doors.

He said the robbers’ modus operandi was to enter the house through the back door apparently knowing back doors seldom had additional locks.

Poge also called on residents to organise their own neighbourhood crime watch to reduce the crime rates.

Another idea, he said, is to bring car keys into the bedroom and if there are signs of someone attempting to enter the house, they can trigger the car’s alarm which will scare them off.

He said it is also good to install alarms and CCTV as additional preventive measures.
