KUCHING: Exciting developments are on the horizon for local tennis players, as the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association’s (SLTA) courts here are slated for significant upgrades, including the addition of roofs.
Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, emphasised the importance of these upgrades during a press conference at the SLTA Tennis Centre today (Dec 17).
“Given the numerous local and international tournaments hosted here, it’s time for us to advance our facilities,” he said.
A key feature of the renovation will be the installation of carbon roofing, aimed at preventing weather-related disruptions during matches.
Henry, who is also a tennis enthusiast, highlighted the challenges posed by unpredictable weather, noting, “With roofs over the courts, players won’t have to worry about rain delaying their games.”
The project, estimated to cost around RM1 million for two courts, is awaiting approval from the Sarawak government.
“Once we have the funding, the installation should take about six months,” he added.
SLTA president, Datuk Patrick Liew, noted that while some upgrades like court resurfacing and improved lighting are already approved, the roofing project is still in the proposal stage. The timeline for these improvements, however, might not align with the 2024 Malaysian Games (SUKMA) in the state.
“We’re hopeful but it depends on funding and approval,” Liew said.
The press conference also revealed plans for three international tournaments scheduled for early next year, with upgrade works ideally commencing between May and July.
Also present were SLTA Vice President I Douglas Telajan, Honourary Secretary Bernard Chin, and other dignitaries. The final of the 2023 YB Dato Henry Harry Jinep Inter-Team Tennis Tournament, which was slated for the same day, was rescheduled to the following Thursday due to rain.
