KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang (pic), has scolded DAP’s Abdul Aziz Isa for accusing him of not showing empathy for school maintenance although the federal government is in-charge of education.

Abdul Aziz is a special assistant to Sarawak Pakatan Harapan (PH) chief, Chong Chieng Jen, as well as DAP Batu Kitang leader.

“I want to remind Abdul Aziz that it is not about empathy but more about obligation and responsibility. He questioned why the federal government is neglecting Sarawak schools just like the neglect of grass cutting along federal roads,” he said.

In a press statement, he said the federal government had been taking RM15 billion worth of oil and gas annually from Sarawak, but when it comes to giving back it is so tight-fisted.

Since 2017, Lo said he and Batu Kawa assemblyman, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, had been giving RM10,000 each to SK Garland for its maintenance and student activities.

“In 2017, I also contributed RM300,000 for the building of a road to SK Garland,” he said.

Lo told Abdul Aziz not to brag about the allocation from the federal government to give to some schools as that is the duty of those in power. He said although education is the responsibility of the federal government, state government leaders have been helping schools too by allocating funds for their activities.

He said it would be better for power over education to be returned to Sarawak as there are good teachers in the state.
