KUCHING: The government is open to the idea of passing a law that would let the public remove representatives who are not doing their jobs or are causing them problems, according to Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
The proposal could be considered to be gazetted in Malaysia, said the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
He believed that any elected MP who disobeyed the Constitution is betraying the will of the people.
New Sarawak Tribune talked to a few people for their thoughts.
Nor Hazlinda Hasbi, 35, Entrepreneur
“Yes. Totally agree. This is not unusual because it is in place in many nations, including the United Kingdom and New Zealand. They are party hopping, which is against the Constitution, and when party members leave a party, elections must be held.”
Awg Hisamuddin Awg Hang Tuah, 35, Welder
“Yes. I agree. A democracy cannot be valued economically since elections must be held. People must thus make the best decision and evaluation.”
Dyg Nuriznaini Awg Jobli, 27, Customer Service
“If there is a troublesome MP or one who does not do his or her duties, they might file a petition for a recall election. Although we haven’t yet, we will if the necessity arises or enough individuals demand it.”
Zulfadli Osemin, 36, IT Officer
“It’s time to sack non-functioning or problematic representatives. This is an opportunity for the community to choose the right candidate to lead who can bring the nation forward in terms of economy, education and development as well as unity.”
Dayang Hadijah Awang Bidin, 61, Housewife
“We want to see the commitment and skills of a genuine leader, to help the community, religion, nation and country holistically. It is a new approach towards finding superior and competitive leadership.”
Abdul Aziz, 18, Student
“We need the direction of skilled, broad-minded, and international-level leadership. We want to see leadership characteristics that are competitive and able to go to the field to monitor people’s problems and be able to bring development to a place.”
