KUCHING: The Sarawak government, represented by the Forest Department Sarawak, officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan.

This collaboration, stemming from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) established in Tsukuba, Japan, on Dec 1, 2023, was solidified during a symposium titled ‘Bilateral Collaboration Research Towards Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in Sarawak’, held at the Waterfront Hotel here.

“This collaboration between Forest Department Sarawak and NIES, Japan has created a historical chapter for the state. It is hoped that this collaboration will benefit Sarawak, especially for the forestry sector and the environment,” said Forest Department Sarawak director Datuk Hamden Mohammad,

The MoA is executed by the Sarawak government as a counterpart to regulate research activities and obligations of the parties for the purpose of consultancy services on Forest Volume Modelling Using UAV-Derived Metrics and Permanent Sample Plot.

During the symposium, researchers from NIES, Japan, along with representatives from the Forest Department Sarawak and University Malaysia Sarawak, presented nine papers.
