The Sarawak Craft Council is set to elevate the prominence of Sarawak’s crafts on the global stage.

Repok assemblyman Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said that this initiative reaffirms the Sarawak government’s dedication to promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage and establishing itself as a premier craft destination worldwide.

“As the gateway to Borneo, Sarawak’s arts and crafts epitomise the identity and cultural legacy of our state, which encompasses 31 distinct ethnic groups,” said Huang, adding that the exceptional nature of Sarawak crafts lies in the artisans’ mastery of both traditional and contemporary techniques.

According to him, the international recognition bestowed upon Sarawak’s crafts further validates their uniqueness, with Kuching earning the prestigious title of ‘International City for Crafts’ from the World Crafts Council (WCC) in 2019.

During the debate on the Sarawak Craft Council Bill at the DUN yesterday, Huang highlighted the presence of numerous craft experts from Sarawak who have attained international acclaim. Notable crafts that have garnered recognition include Keringkam, Pua Kumbu, hand-woven crafts, baskets, and beadwork.
