KUCHING: Sarawak has detected two Omicron XBB sub variant cases, involving a traveller with a USA passport while the other case had returned from performing the umrah.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah in a statement today said he was informed of the detection today.

The cases were detected from samples of positive cases collected early last month.

“The Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak made the discovery today in its sequencing run…,” he said.

“The institute is sequencing another batch of samples collected in the same month and is likely to detect more cases,” he added.

According to IHCM director Prof Dr David Perera, it was likely that the XBB has spread in Sarawak since early October.
