SIBU : At this point in time regardless of whether or not a majority of Sarawakians realise it, the state is facing a critical moment in its political struggle within the federation.

When presented with the choice of whether to support Sarawak-based parties or ‘outsiders’ now that the state is in the opposition whereas the outsiders hold power at the federal/central level, SUPP second deputy president, Datuk Chieng Buong Toon, could not help dwell for awhile on what he called “critical moment”.

Yesterday when asked to comment on Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh’s statement about PSB going to contest against Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the next state election, he sidestepped the topic a bit and talked on the “bigger picture”, that is, the sovereignty and political future of Sarawak vis-a-vis its autonomy as stipulated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

This situation becomes “critical” because Sarawakians are forced to confront the choice of being ruled, after the next state election, by Sarawak-based parties that have promised to pursue autonomy for the state, or being ruled by Sarawakians whose parties are controlled by Malayan leaders who treat them as mere proxies.

Considering this scenario, Chieng wants all Sarawakians to unite, to preserve the Sarawak regime instead of destroying it.

What he meant was even if you don’t like your face (Sarawak politics), don’t cut your nose (GPS) to spite it because the result can’t be reversed and everybody would lose.

“All Sarawakians must reach a consensus to ensure Sarawak’s autonomy and claim its rights and interests contained in MA63,” he said.

As the situation is already critical, he thinks that Sarawakians must be well prepared, think positively, put things in perspective, be knowledgeable, be calm when under stressful situation, make a plan or plans and be decisive in fighting for themselves because other people might be too busy with their own problems to help.
