KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) has teamed up with CelcomDigi to boost digital transformation and sustainability in the energy sector, capitalising on 5G technology.

The partnership was cemented with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at a two-year strategic collaboration which encourages both entities to explore technological and digital initiatives in the industrial sector using 5G, which could lead to ongoing enhancements across PETRONAS’ operations.

Moreover, this alliance will explore integrating clean energy solutions into CelcomDigi’s offerings for enterprises, aiming to increase their adoption among Malaysian businesses.

“PETRONAS plays a major role in advancing the national technology agenda, which supports Malaysia’s status as a leader in innovation,” said PETRONAS in a statement.

PETRONAS also highlighted its pioneering efforts in adopting 5G technology for enterprises in Malaysia, citing last year’s introduction of a 5G private network at its Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU), which improved operational efficiency.

“We aim to build a robust network infrastructure that meets the increasing demand for reliable, high-speed internet access within the oil and gas sector,” it added.

The MoU also signifies a push towards modernising oil and gas operations with enhanced 5G connectivity.

“Together, we have developed practical digital applications for rig operations. For instance, what started as a pilot test for ‘connected rig workers’ has now become essential for maintaining productivity and safety,” it said.

Notably, the partnership between PETRONAS and CelcomDigi began in 2019 with the deployment of the first private 4G LTE network on Angsi, a major offshore platform. This collaboration has since expanded to include 21 fully 4G connected offshore platforms. It has also enhanced connectivity infrastructures in PETRONAS plants, which supports digital solutions that improve plant operational efficiencies.
