KUCHING: Sarawakians are urged to brace themselves as the state anticipates up to six bouts of heavy rain during the ongoing northeast monsoon, expected to persist until March next year.
Sarawak Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas issued the caution after a meeting to discuss preparations for the monsoon season. The committee has already identified 154 flood-prone areas across Sarawak.
“Throughout this monsoon period, we anticipate six episodes of heavy rain. Besides floods and strong winds, high tides, rough seas, and strong waves are expected in the South China Sea, posing risks to seafaring vessels,” he said in a statement.
Hence, I urge the public to prepare themselves and remain vigilant with the latest information, advice, and weather warnings. They should also cooperate with authorities if evacuation becomes necessary.
The Deputy Premier pointed out that the state has a manpower strength of 5,501 personnel, 487 land assets, 249 sea and river assets, 12 air assets, and 207 support assets. Additionally, 70 fibre boats have been distributed across divisions for potential evacuation needs.
Addressing disaster relief measures, he assured that the Social Welfare Department has stocked sufficient aid, and the Civil Defence Force can prepare 4,000 food kits for supplementary assistance.
Temporary relief centres (PPS) are ready, with a total of 627 PPS prepared for activation when needed, accommodating up to 162,091 evacuees simultaneously.
