Sarawak mulls institution to provide facilities, funds for SMEs

SIBU: The Sarawak government will establish an institution that will provide facilities and financial funds to assist the small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said with the proposed institution will not only benefit the SMEs but at the same time will expand Sarawak’s economy.

“I will announce the institution within this two months. It (the institution) will provide loan facilities and funds to help the small and medium enterprises (SMEs).”

He said this when met by reporters after attending a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house of Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee here yesterday (April 25).

Abang Johari also stressed the importance of having good education to ensure that Sarawak have enough human capital to venture into the new economy.

Earlier, in his speech during the Aidilfitri celebration with Sibu community at Dewan Lakis, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government is actively exploring new technology and new revenue base for the state.

He said the new economies that the state are venturing into include carbon trading which is bound to change Sarawak’s economic landscape for the better.

“We are going to explore new technology and new revenue base, and that will change Sarawak.

“God-willing, Peninsular Malaysia is starting to look up to us because Sarawak has already changed,” he said.

Also present were Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Office (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
