KUCHING: Sarawak plans to explore wave-based energy generation, a concept currently deployed in Shanghai, China.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg explained that using waves, it will be able to generate energy.

“I have tried it in Samalaju, Bintulu, 4 kilometres at sea.

“This is new, this is also a prototype, I have diversified the source of energy which is green (energy). When we use technology, we have to think outside of the box,” he said.

Abang Johari also pointed out there is a need for comprehensive analysis and research to optimise water-related technologies in the state.

“We have Batang Lupar, Batang Kerian, Batang Saribas and Batang Sadong. So many (rivers) and that’s why more analysis and study are needed to produce better services and more energies,” he said

He also revealed that a new water technology prototype will be set up in Stumbin, Sri Aman, to generate electricity using river water.

He explained that the new technology would be dependent on river water.

“We use the water from the river, we pump it into an elevated tank and release the water through a pipe and what is needed is the force of water.

“What is needed is running water, water that falls from the concept of gravity, it will then generate energy through the rivers,” he told reporters when attending the Hari Raya open house of former Batang Lupar MP, Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim yesterday.

Abang Johari added the prototype was expected to produce 500 kilowatts of electricity and will rely on the force of water accelerated by a turbine.
