‘Sarawak Rights & Referendum Ordinance’ forum on 23 April

KUCHING: Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) will be organising the ‘Sarawak Rights & Referendum Ordinance’ forum on 23 April 2017 at Kenyalang Theatre Hall from 10.00am until 4.00pm.

With coordination from Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (SADIA) and Kuching Traditional Handicraft Studies Society (KTHSS), the forum is open to all general public with admission fee of RM10 each, free seating concept.

S4S Spokesperson, Peter John Jaban said the forum will focus on four topics namely Referendum Ordinance, Finance (including oil and gas), Lands Rights and Education.

“The speakers shall elaborate further on the topics, so that every Sarawakian shall understand further about our rights or issues we face at the moment. The name of speakers will be revealed in the upcoming press conference,” he said at S4S press conference held at Telang Usan Hotel here, yesterday.

He added that the people especially the indigenous group, cared most about the Native Customary Rights (NCR) issues.

“The people should know about their rights and authorities’ limitation to prevent the frequent land disputes and conflicts between the people and the authorities.

“In addition to the land issues, the educational level in Sarawak needs major improvement. The people should take initiative to explore the rights and powers of their education, although it is still under the authority of Federal Government because education is the key factor to improve the people’s knowledge and skills,” Peter pointed out, adding that he also will updating the status of land with Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Meanwhile, S4S Southern Activity chief who is also KTHSS Director, Chan Chee Hiong told that under the Charter of the United Nations, ‘Referendum’ is one of the key fundamental of human rights.

“The people of Sarawak must know about their rights, how we can use Referendum to protect their rights and best interests of Sarawakians.

“Therefore, we would like to invite the public to come to discuss and understand how Referendum Ordinance works,” he stressed.

Those who are interested can purchase the ticket at Premier 101 starting from 7 April until 22 April from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
