Sarawak Shell Bhd pumps USD5bil into sour gas commercialisation

SARAWAK Shell Bhd has committed approximately USD5bil to advance the commercialisation of sour gas from Sarawak’s offshore fields.

The company is establishing the Onshore Gas Plant 1 (OGP 1) within the Petchem Industrial Park at Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu.

During his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on today (May 24), Deputy Premier cum Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, announced that the site preparation for OGP 1 is underway, and construction is scheduled to commence this year.

“At the same time, PTTEP HK Ltd, a Thai company, is also considering investing USD5bil to commercialise their own sour gas discovery. The final investment decision (FID) by PTTEP is expected to be made in early 2024.”Awang Tengah went on to highlight the partnership betwe

en Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and an American investor in a medical glove manufacturing project valued at RM130mil. “The project, currently in the construction phase, is set to become operational by early 2024.”

Additionally, he explained that SEDC is collaborating with investors from South Korea and Japan on two hydrogen projects, with a total investment worth approximately RM24bil. “Both projects are currently in the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage and are targeting FID by 2024, with operations expected to commence by 2027.”
